Welcome

Edinburgh Welfare currently owns two spacious shacks at Barmera. Located approximately 200Km North East of Adelaide in the sunny Riverland, these two shacks are situated in a quite corner of town, located directly opposite the banks of Lake Bonney.

Facilities

The shacks were renovated in 2000 and are self-contained. Each shack can accommodate a family of up to six people. They each consist of:

  • Two bedrooms (one with double bed, the other with two bunks),
  • Blankets and pillows provided, although it is best to take your own,
  • Full kitchen facilities including all cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils, microwave, oven, fridge etc,
  • Small lounge/dining with TV,
  • Reverse Cycle air conditioning,
  • Separate toilet/shower block (one bathroom for each shack),
  • Laundry with automatic washing machine and ironing facilities,
  • Gas BBQ,
  • Outdoor table and chairs,
  • Canoes (life jackets available through the Welfare Store); and
  • Jet ski hire available from Bluebird Café (caretaker), directly across the road (seasonal).

Extra Stuff

Barmera is one of the most popular aquatic playgrounds in South Australia. Situated in the heart of the Riverland, Barmera is a beautiful town located on the shores of Lake Bonney - a lake renowned for its sunsets. Lake Bonney is fresh water, fed from the Murray River through the Chambers Creek wetlands. Because the lake is shallow and has a sandy bottom, it is ideal for swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, jet skiing, boating and fishing. The lake also abounds with bird life.

The SA Country Music Festival and Awards is held for 10 days in June leading up to and including the Long Weekend. There are also many other events held in Barmera, including the Riverland Field Days in September, the Barmera Berri Show in March, and Easter and Christmas activities.

The towns of Berri, Renmark, Loxton and Waikerie are all located within a half-hour’s drive of Barmera.

Cleaning and Caretaking

It is asked that those who use the shacks clean them before they depart. It is expected that the shacks be vacuumed, mopped and that the bathrooms are clean for the next patrons. The caretaker carries out an inspection after the use of each shack and any damage done will be the responsibility of the occupant. The caretaker is located opposite the shacks in the Bluebird Café. During opening hours keys can be collected from the café.

Rates

Shacks may be booked through the Welfare Office via the Make a Booking Button found next to the calendar. Bookings for holiday periods (ie. Christmas/New Year, Easter and long weekends) are accepted provided you haven't had the same period last year. If there are no other requests for that period, you are more than welcome to utilise the shacks at that time. A ballot will be conducted should there be several parties interested in any one time (ie Easter). Priority will be given to full time ADF members, followed by reservists, then Defence civilians and contractors.

The current rate is $35.00 per night, plus a maintenance fee of $10.00 (per shack, per visit). If seven nights or more are booked, the seventh night is free. During the low season 1 May to 30 Sep a reduced rate of $20 per night from Monday to Thursday is to apply, excluding public holidays and school holidays.

Money can be paid by cash or a cheque made out to ‘RAAF Edinburgh Formation Welfare’ and passed to the Welfare Office in BLD 304. The caretaker will not release the keys until the money has been paid.

Location

The Shacks are located at Number 2 and 3 Queen Elizabeth Dr, Barmera SA 5345. See attached map for more information
